Just as the summer season is upon us, on some beaches of Cefalu is taking a mysterious phenomenon that has intrigued some swimmers who began photographing some blue jellyfishes.
A jellyfish's colony of the species "Velella Velella" has, in fact, caught the eye of tourists and some bathers on the beach in the last week of April.

The Velella velella, also known as St.Peter's boat, are typical of the Mediterranean sea and travel in large groups driven by wind and sea currents, and if the wind pushes them towards the coast, they end up on the beaches, giving them a characteristic blue color.

According to a document of Professor Ferdinando Boero, a marine biologist at the University of Salerno, "the Velella floats on the sea surface and it adrift in the wind. Its polyps, attached under the base from which crop up the sail, are suspended in the underlying water and catch all the animals who venture to the surface. Their presence indicates that the surface of the sea is not polluted."

Unlike the common jellyfish, the Velella are not irritating because the toxins, although effective against the prey, are harmless to humans, for the fact that they can not penetrate the skin so do not cause any reaction to the skin of man. Anyway, you should do not touch your eyes after you picked up a Velella velella.
